Media140 Perth: How WA companies can use the Real Time Web for Marketing

The Media140 meeting at the Perth Town Hall has introduced the use of social media and the real time web to quite a number of SME's, represented by their marketing teams.  Here's what the TMI team will remember.

Marketing includes social media, if you like it or not

Even if your company decides not to use Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube...Your community might. Your customers, network, colleagues and competitors might bring your brand in the online discussion. Be aware that you need to prepare for a dialogue on these platforms.

New job descriptions appear thanks to social media

Large companies such as Microsoft hire "Professional Geeks" to monitor online conversations about the brand. Even if your brand is small and local,  it's worth the effort to have one of your team members be the geek who checks what's being said online about your company.

Perth catching up,  local agencies introducing new media use

Although Perth has not reached the social media levels other world capitals are displaying,  we are catching up. Local PR agencies are rapidly shifting towards the use of CEO statements on YouTube,  or training workshops for employees on the use of Twitter and Facebook.

Starting to use new media, WA companies are still doubting about letting go of the broadcast model.  Sending their content to an audience through new media is a first step. But the next step is to create interaction between consumers on your platform... Monitoring the dialogue, but no longer controlling the content.

Media140 has created a platform for Perth professionals to participate in regular meetups.  On Twitter, search for #media140 to get in touch with the local organisers.
